The mason who built this fireplace installed  a simple mantel, but the client felt that it looked unfinished. She asked me to install some “legs” on either side to make it a complete “fireplace surround.” I purchased 4 1/2″x3/4″ fluted boards and constructed two corners in the shop. The existing mantle sagged slightly, so the new legs were made long enough to push the mantel back level. Here you see “before” and “after” photos.
